My Bodhisattva Vows

Since I'm going to be still here on Planet Earth for a while, I'm going to make some vows that matter to me:

  • I vow to support Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's Buddha work by protecting and saving sentient beings from the lower realms of existence. I will not attain Buddhahood until Ksitigarbha has completely cleansed the hells from suffering sentient beings.
  • I vow to assist Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva's Buddha work by transforming and delivering sentient beings to the other shore of Nirvana. I will not touch beef and will love cows and cattle and I will cultivate loving kindness and compassion for sentient beings.
  • I vow to uphold Amitabha Sutra and His 48 great vows and recommend Sukhavati as a choice destination for afterlife for those who can invoke the tiniest of faith in Amitabha Buddha by reciting His noble name Namo Amituofo. I will chant the Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Dhāraṇī for those who are dying or dead and help them seek rebirth into Sukhavati.
  • I vow to undertake Samantabhadra Bodhisattva's 10 great vows and regularly dedicate merits to sentient beings so that all may attain Buddhahood. I will honour His Six-tusked White Elephant and practise the Six Pāramitās to my best of abilities.
  • I vow to cultivate esoteric Buddhist practices under the tutelage of Cundī Bodhisattva and master the Cundī Dhāraṇī in my bid to purify my negative karma. I pledge to cultivate wholesome deeds and be like a lotus blooming in mudbanks so that I can inspire countless sentient beings towards the Buddhadharma.
  • I vow to protect the Surangama Mantra and Surangama Sutra and seek guidance from Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva during times of crisis such as manmade wars or natural disasters. May the Surangama method always prevail such that wherever we go, we will always bring peace and happiness.
  • I vow to remain secular as a Zen householder like Vimalakīrti Bodhisattva and never be impoverished so that I have excess wealth to assist sentient beings. I do not intend to fall sick, but if I do, may I use my sickness to help sentient beings with their spiritual practice so that we all can grow wise and compassionate together.
  • I vow to honour women just as I was converted to Vajrayana & Mahayana Buddhism under the auspices of the goddess Tārā the female Buddha, and I will practise tantric techniques as guided by my gurus within my abilities so as to rescue sentient beings along the way.
These eight vows will accompany me as I continue my seek for salvation for both myself and all sentient beings. In my Mahayana tradition: Om Mani Padme Hum!
